Ankylosing Spondylitis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the spine. This disease has different ranges of involvement from peripheral joints and nonarticular structures. If you suffer from this condition, you are likely to have brittle bones and your pinched nerves in the spine. Your spine may also be in the wrong alignment.

Spine Infections

Infections of the spine are common conditions giving rise to non-mechanical back pain. It is common to see spine infections if you are suffering from diabetes mellitus, or other illnesses that lower your immunity. Infection can be either due to pus-forming organisms (pyogenic) or slow growing infections like tuberculosis (Figure 9). Infections of the spine are unique in the sense that there may be no other symptom except back pain. It is not necessary for you to have fever or other symptoms as seen with infection elsewhere in your body.

Consulting your spine specialist cannot be emphasized enough in such cases of back pain. If not treated timely, it may cause vast destruction of your back bones leading to gross instability and risk to the nerves.

You may be referred by your rheumatologist to see us for possible surgery. Surgery will usually involve inserting titanium screws and rods to correct the deformity (Figure 1), as well as opening the space for the nerves for the stabilization of your spine.

Our doctor Adjunct A/Professor Hee Hwan Tak specialises in the conservative as well as surgical treatment of inflammatory spine diseases. Contact us for a comprehensive consultation.
